The Municipality of Carrascal has officially turned over a one-unit greenhouse project to Carrascal National High School (CNHS). Funded through the 20% Development Fund, this ₱2,000,000 project marks a milestone as the first of its kind in schools across Surigao del Sur, integrating modern agricultural technology and innovative production systems.
Designed as a technology demonstration facility, the greenhouse provides hands-on learning opportunities for students, equipping them with skills in modern food production. Currently used for lettuce and watermelon cultivation, it features a tower system and the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) hydroponics system—both maximizing space and resources. Aligned with the Department of Education’s Gulayan sa Paaralan Program, this initiative promotes sustainable vegetable production in schools and households, enhances students’ agricultural knowledge and skills, educates parents on nutrition through homegrown produce, and fosters a culture of food security and sustainability within the community.
The turnover ceremony was attended by key local officials and school representatives, including Hon. Leovino M. Constantino, Sangguniang Bayan Member, Chairperson for Agriculture, Sweetzel V. Correos, RSW, representative of Hon. Vicente H. Pimentel III, Municipal Mayor, Dr. Levi Mar Pazo, CNHS School Principal, Victorino S. Nimes, former School Head, Japhet C. Sugian, Municipal Agriculturist, along with the Municipal Agriculture Office staff, and The faculty, staff, and students of Carrascal National High School.
This groundbreaking initiative seeks to bring modern agricultural technologies closer to students, ignite their interest in agri-fishery courses, and ultimately shape a new generation of agricultural innovators. By modernizing farming practices, we move toward a more resilient and food-secure future for our country.
